Driving in Sri Lanka as a Foreign Visitor
1. International Driving Permit (IDP)
To drive a vehicle yourself in Sri Lanka, you must obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's automobile association (e.g., AA in UK/Australia/South Africa, AAA in USA) prior to your departure.
Your IDP must match the 1949 or 1968 Convention guidelines. Your home country physical card licence must also accompany the IDP at all times.
2. Age & Verification Policy
The minimum age limit to rent a self-drive vehicle with VeloLanka is 23 years. All drivers must have held a valid driver's licence for a minimum of 2 years.
We will verify your physical passport, home driving licence, and physical IDP at the time of vehicle handover. Digital scans or photos are not accepted for physical verification.
Need assistance? If your country does not issue an IDP, you must obtain a temporary driving permit from the AAC in Colombo. Contact us beforehand, and our operations team can assist in arranging this document in advance of your arrival.
